2019 Highway Improvement Projects

    Highway 1

    • Highway 1 will be reconstructed from kilometre 207-222. This includes crushing and stockpiling material, hauling gravel, widening the highway embankment, replacing culverts, and clearing bushes and trees from the right-of-way.
    • A culvert will also be repaired at kilometre 510.6.

    Highway 3

    • Highway 3 will be repaired and rehabilitated from kilometre 244.1-256.3.  This includes leveling and compacting the existing road surface, crushing and stockpiling material, hauling gravel, and replacing culverts.
    • Highway 3 will also receive a chipseal overlay from kilometre 124-164.

    Highway 4

    • Highway 4 will be reconstructed from kilometre 51.12-54.60. Work includes crushing and stockpiling material, gravel hauling, embankment widening, culvert replacements, and chipsealing.

    Highway 5

    • Highway 5 will receive a chipseal overlay from kilometres 24-54 and 211-266.

    Highway 6

    • Highway 6 will receive a chipseal overlay from kilometre 0-42 and kilometre 66-90.

    Highway 7

    • Highway 7 is expected to be reconstructed from kilometre 20-23. Work is expected to include crushing and stockpiling material, gravel hauling, embankment widening, and culvert replacements.

    Highway 8

    • Highway 8 will be reconstructed from kilometre 148-150.  Work includes crushing and stockpiling material, gravel hauling, embankment widening, and culvert replacements.
    • A culvert will be replaced at kilometres 147 and 266.1.

    Highway 10

    • A culvert will be replaced at kilometre 131.2.

    Pedestrian trail in Yellowknife

    • The pedestrian path from downtown Yellowknife to the Niven Lake substation will be paved.

    Inuvik Airport Access Road and Hospital Hill Drive

    • The Inuvik Airport Access Road will be reconstructed from kilometre 259.4-269.
    • The reconstruction includes crushing and stockpiling material, gravel hauling, and embankment widening, culvert replacements, and right-of-way clearing.

    Hay River Reserve Access Road

    • The Hay River Reserve Road will receive a chipseal overlay from kilometre 0-12
    • Surface repairs will also be carried out.

    Rae Access Road

    • The Rae Access Road is expected to be upgraded from kilometre 0-10.

    Jean Marie River Access Road

    • A section of Jean Marie River access road will be resurfaced with surfacing gravel.

    Canyon Creek Access Road

    • Erosion and sediment control to be carried out.

    Mackenzie Valley Winter Road

    • The Blackwater Bridge Bridge approaches will be improved.

    Hay River to Pine Point Bridge - Rehabilitation

    October 1, 2018 – October 31, 2019

    The Hay River to Pine Point Bridge is undergoing rehabilitation. While the bridge is rehabilitated, the following restrictions will be in place:

    • Single lane traffic only.
    • Traffic will be detoured on the nearby CN Bridge starting February 2, 2019 until the Pine Point Bridge reopens. 
    • No pedestrian traffic will be allowed on the detour bridge or in the construction zone.
    • Width restriction of 4.5 metres. Permit applications for over dimensioned and overweight loads will be assessed on a case by case basis, but no loads wider than 4.5 metres will be permitted.
    • Observe reduced speed limits within the construction zone. Double fines will be applied.
    • Traffic delays could last up to 15 minutes.
