Overview
The GNWT completed critical repairs on the Deh Cho Bridge to maintain its safety and longevity. Work included expansion joint, cable replacements and other key components. Repairs took place from November 2024 to February 2025. The bridge reopened to regular two-way traffic on February 7, 2025.
Current Status
- Repairs are complete and the bridge is fully open to two-lane traffic.
- Speed limits and other temporary restrictions have been removed.
Timeline
- August 2023: A broken cable was discovered, and safety measures were implemented (one-lane traffic, speed limit reduction). The cause of the cable failure was linked to a metallurgical defect in a threaded bar. Inspections confirmed all 24 adjustment bars were from the same batch, leading to the decision to replace them all.
- August 2023 – November 2024: Inspections, analyses, and additional safety measures were completed, with no further defects detected in other cables.
- November 2024 – January 2025: All materials arrived; the broken cable was removed and the new cable installed. All adjusting bars on the cables were replaced.
- January – February 2025: Damaged guardrails and lighting were replaced and the north deck joint was repaired. Additional maintenance work on the deck joints will be undertaken in summer 2025.
- February 07, 2025: Work was completed and the bridge reopened to two-lane traffic.
