About the Project
The Redknife River Bridge project involves replacing the existing crossing on Highway 1 with a new bridge structure. The current crossing, built in 1971, consists of three structural plate corrugated steel pipes, which have reached the end of their service life.
The replacement is being undertaken following a determination by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) that a bridge is required to restore upstream passage for migratory fish. The new bridge will improve environmental conditions while enhancing the safety and reliability of this section of highway infrastructure.
This project is part of the Government of the Northwest Territories’ ongoing efforts to maintain and modernize its bridge and culvert network, ensuring safe and efficient travel across the territory.
Timeline
- 1971: Existing culvert structure constructed
- April 2025: Construction began
- October 2026: Substantial completion anticipated
Project Funding and Partners
The Redknife River Bridge project is being delivered through a partnership between the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Department of Infrastructure (INF) and De Beers Canada.
Work is proceeding under a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines cost-sharing between INF and De Beers Canada. The project also aligns with broader GNWT bridge and bridge-culvert replacement programs, which prioritize the renewal of aging infrastructure across the territory.
Project Status
Construction is currently underway as part of a multi-year project. Work is progressing through the 2026 construction season, with completion expected in fall 2026.
Progress to Date
Significant progress has been made on the Redknife River Bridge:
- Major structural work is ongoing at the site
- Deck panels have been installed (June 2026 milestone)
- Crews are continuing work on formwork and other bridge components
Construction activities will continue through the 2026 season, with a focus on completing remaining structural elements and site works ahead of the planned October 2026 completion.
