Construction updates
as of November 1st, 2024
Work is progressing on the runway extension and civil improvements surface structures adaptation for climate change.
As shown in the graphic above, the current construction stages include:
- Extraction of quarry material is the process of removing rock, sand, gravel or other minerals from the ground in order to use them to produce materials for construction. Quarry rock will be blasted and crushed for use in embankment fills, paving the runway extensions and taxiway widening, and lining the ditches to prevent erosion.
- Ditching refers to the new stormwater ditches that are being constructed throughout the airfield to more effectively carry drainage water away from the runway and taxiways, and prevent standing water which causes permafrost degradation.
- Widening of the runway safety area will allow the airport to accommodate a wider range of aircraft, support the Department of National Defence's needs, and bring the Inuvik airport into conformance with updated Transport Canada regulations.
