GHG Grant Program for Government
Overview
This program helps fund projects that reduce or replace fossil fuel use and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the NWT.
Funding is provided by the GNWT, with support from the Government of Canada through the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund (LCELF).
Who This Funding Is For
Eligible applicants include:
- Indigenous governments and organizations
- Community and regional governments
- Territorial departments, agencies, and public bodies
- Other eligible organizations outlined in the Program Guide
Individuals and private homeowners are not eligible for this funding. Smaller energy-related grants may be available through the Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA).
Have an Idea but aren’t eligible to Apply?
If you’re a resident with an idea to reduce fossil fuel use in your community, consider sharing it with your:
- Community government
- Indigenous government or organization
- Local utility or housing provider
Many projects start with community-driven ideas.
What the Program Funds
The program supports projects that reduce or replace current energy use – that use less fossil fuel or switch to cleaner energy.
Examples include:
- Reduce or replace fossil fuel use
- Lower long-term energy costs
- Are ready to move forward within the funding window
- Benefit a community, region, or public service
- Align with local or regional energy plans
Projects don’t need to be large or complex: practical, proven solutions are encouraged.
Available Funding
- Funding is application-based.
- Projects must have a minimum total cost of $100,000. (Smaller energy-related grants may also be available through the AEA).
- Funding can cover 25% to 75% of eligible project costs, depending on the project.
- Organizations may apply more than once.
- Multi-year projects and funding agreements may be considered.
- Multiple projects may be funded each year.
Deadline to apply
- Applications are open until June 30, 2026
How to apply
- Review the program guide to confirm your project is eligible.
- We encourage applicants to contact the GHG Grant Program team early to discuss project ideas and eligibility. This helps ensure applications are complete and competitive.
- Complete the application form and proposal template.
- Gather all required supporting documents listed in the checklist.
- Submit your completed application package.
Evaluation
- Applications are reviewed by a GNWT evaluation team
- We may contact you with questions or to request clarification
- Funding decisions depend on available funds and project readiness
Timelines may vary depending on application volume.
